Tempe Storm Sparks Emergency Declarations in Arizona
On October 13, 2025, a supercell thunderstorm fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storms Priscilla and Raymond produced heavy rains, extreme winds, and hail across parts of Arizona. In Maricopa County, the storm produced microburst winds reaching up to 91 miles per hour. The severe weather caused damage to private homes and businesses in Tempe, where more than an estimated 750 homes and 70 small businesses were affected. More than 34,000 people lost power during the event, and some residents were displaced and placed in temporary shelters.
In response to the storm, Mayor Corey Woods of Tempe declared a state of emergency on Tuesday. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors also declared an emergency in the affected areas, and Governor Katie Hobbs extended the state of emergency to Tempe and other hard-hit regions. Officials stated that these declarations are necessary to apply for potential federal funding.
City and county officials are asking residents who suffered any damage—from broken windows to business losses—to complete a damage assessment form. Completed forms will help local government secure funds needed for the recovery effort. Additional resources and the damage assessment form are available at tempe.gov/TempeStorm.
Separately, on October 15, the City of Tempe and Gila County declared states of emergency, followed by Maricopa County on October 16, in response to the storm's impacts.
