Maricopa County Honors Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Maricopa County has designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month following a proclamation adopted by the Board of Supervisors. Throughout the month, several activities and displays will take place in support of survivors and to honor lives lost to domestic violence.

For October, the County Administration Building at 301 W. Jefferson St. in Phoenix will be lit purple. In addition, Maricopa County has organized a donation drive running from October 1 to 31 across all 14 branches of the Maricopa Library District. Items such as new toiletry products and non-perishable food are being collected for local shelters.

On Thursday, October 16, County employees and residents are encouraged to wear purple as a symbol of their commitment to ending domestic violence. Other planned events include a Coffee & Donuts gathering on the Durango Campus with District 5 and the Maricopa County Department of Transportation, as well as an Employee Unity Luncheon at the County Administration Building.

The county’s efforts come after reports that last year 61 Arizonans lost their lives to domestic violence-related homicides. Help is available for those who need it; individuals are urged to call 1-800-782-6400 or visit arizonasurvivors.org for support.
