Phoenix Officer-Involved Shooting During Robbery Response
The Phoenix Police Department released a Critical Incident Briefing video detailing an officer-involved shooting on September 8, 2025, near 35th Avenue and Washington Street. The incident began after officers responded to an armed robbery in the 35th Avenue and Fillmore Street area. A caller reported that a man had threatened her father with a gun and taken his cell phone, providing a description of the suspect.
A two-officer patrol unit later located a vehicle matching the description near 35th Avenue and Washington Street. The vehicle stopped in a parking lot where officers gave commands to the driver, who was argumentative. A second unit arrived, prompting the officers to reposition their vehicles. After repositioning, the officer-involved shooting occurred.
When the vehicle attempted to drive forward but became stuck, one officer used a pepper ball launcher, striking the vehicle. A second officer, armed with a rifle, discharged his weapon after the suspect raised his handgun. Officers then secured the scene and rendered aid until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. No other injuries were reported.
The officers, assigned to the South Mountain Precinct with between two and eight years of service, are involved in both a criminal investigation by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and an administrative investigation by the Phoenix Police Department. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will also review the incident. Investigations are ongoing, and no conclusions about officer actions have been made at this time.
